The Olympics are coming
July 4, 2008
As the Olympic Games in Beijing draw ever closer we are going to be providing some examples of videos that can be found in the gallery on the subject of the Olympics and China. The Games begin on August 8th (08.08.08 – perfectly timed with eight being regarded as an incredibly lucky number in Chinese culture), will last for two weeks, and involve 10,500 athletes competing across 28 programs (302 sub-categories) for 302 gold medals. Beijing is expecting 550,000 international visitors and 2.4 million domestic spectators. The Paralympic Games will run from September 6th to the 17th.
The logo for the Games is derived from the Chinese character ‘jing’ (京) as in ‘Beijing’ (北京) and combines a significant style of traditional Chinese calligraphy with the image of a human figure running forward to victory.
The first of our Olympic-related videos looks back to Britain’s Olympic heroes of the 2004 Games in Athens and their victory parade through London. Their efforts took Britain to 10th in the Olympic table and 2nd in the Paralympics. Hopefully there will be similar celebrations this year!
Please note that this is an example clip provided through our YouTube channel and does not reflect the actual quality of clips in the gallery.
