Meet the team
Hi, I’m Stephen Fahey, Development and Technology Director. My role is to oversee our product development in the UK – both print and electronic, and I’ve been involved with the development of the Heinemann Video Gallery from the start. I’ve particularly enjoyed working with a committed and talented team, across Heinemann, the BBC, and our teacher contacts.
I’ve worked in the company for nearly 15 years in a variety of roles, including editorial roles in maths and science.

My own personal favourite video is this ‘Toys over 50 years’ clip, partly because my own children were fascinated by it, and partly because some of the children’s reactions in the clip are fantastic.
Hello, I’m Kate Pick. I’m the content lead on HVG; I’m responsible for the development of all the different subject modules and the content of all the video clips. I work closely with a team of teachers and the media coordinators at BBC Motion Gallery.
I’ve been with Pearson since we started creating the gallery in July ‘07 having previously worked on a range of educational software products – Kar2ouche, Media Stage, Moovl and Espresso. I started out as a primary school teacher working in Derbyshire and Oxfordshire.

To select just one video as a favourite is a difficult task, we’re past the 4000 mark now and there are so many inspiring sections of footage. But if pushed I’d go for this clip which is one of the very first clips we put together and shows famous places and landmarks across the UK.
I spent a very happy afternoon with a class of year 1 and 2 children using this video – we located all of the places on a huge wall map of the UK and tried to find out more about them. The children then did the same with their favourite places and finally we painted huge colourful pictures and created a famous place art gallery.
Hello, I am Surj, the Technical Lead for HVG. I worked with Sara (my developer colleague) to make HVG happen, to take it from a series of mock-ups and turn it into an online, interactive website.
We faced a number of technical challenges, the greatest being finding efficient ways to store and retrieve details about the videos, for example how to record the multiple locations in the curricula in which a video can appear.
Thankfully, we think we’ve cracked it. I’ve been working in software for 10 years now. So, hopefully I’ve been able to apply the good things I’ve learnt to HVG

My favourite video is this clip entitled ‘Into the gene: the discovery of DNA’. The sequence where a cell is zoomed into greater and greater detail is fantastic, right through to the DNA being unwound.
Hi, I’m Kate, the Senior Education Co-ordinator at BBC Motion Gallery. I work across the Heinemann project and try to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible!

My favourite clip is this lovely gem about Ancient Egypt – I think we’ve got some lovely content about Ancient Egypt, and getting into Tutankhamun’s tomb and seeing the kinds of treasures that lay in there is just fantastic! So now I’ve added Egypt to my ever-growing ‘places I must visit’ list.
Hi there. I’m James and I work with Kate, our team of teachers, and researchers at the BBC to gather content for the gallery. I’ve been working on the project from the start after starting as an Editorial trainee in 2007.
Before that I spent some time living in Taiwan where I taught English and studied Mandarin. I also write many of the blog posts, so would love to hear from you if you have any thoughts on the blog or the gallery itself: james.m.hill@pearson.com

My favourite video has to be this science clip entitled ‘The Mystery of Little Red Riding Hood’s Ice-cream’. A wolf provides Little Red Riding Hood with a cool box (which she doesn’t think is very ‘cool’!), to put her ice-cream in on the way to Grandma’s house. But, was he just being helpful, or could he have had his own reasons for wanting to keep the ice-cream cool?!
